Benvenuti / Welcome to
Pico
This picturesque little town has ancient origins, and was once the terrain of the Volsci people. It is thought, however, that the name Pico was derived from the Roman deity Picus, a god of agriculture, who took the form of a sacred bird of the woods, the woodpecker. The inhabitants of Pico are known as “picani”.
On a hill measuring 194 metres, stands the remains of a grand castle (Castrum Piko). This dates back to the 11th century, and was founded by Giovanni Scinto, Lord of Aquino.
One of the castle’s towers is particularly well preserved and has been transformed into an elegant clock tower. This fortified medieval town still retains much of its old charm, its ancient houses seem to wind themselves around the contours of the hill, forming tiers which are connected by numerous narrow alleyways and stone stairways.

From this vantage point there are commanding views across the Liri plain and of the Ausoni and Aurunci mountains.
